Recipe

A Batch Old Fashioned for the Patio

An old fashioned cocktail with an orange garnish on a wooden bar

The old fashioned is a clubhouse classic. Mixing it ahead means you spend your time with the group and not behind the bar. Pour it over a big cube and finish with an orange peel.

Ingredients

  • 16 oz (2 cups) bourbon or rye whiskey
  • 2 oz demerara syrup (equal parts demerara sugar and hot water, stirred until dissolved and cooled)
  • 1 teaspoon aromatic bitters (about 16 dashes)
  • 3 oz cold water, for the dilution you would normally get from stirring
  • Large ice cubes and orange peels, to serve

Method

  1. Stir the whiskey, syrup, bitters and water together in a pitcher or clean bottle.
  2. Chill it in the refrigerator for at least an hour. It keeps for a few days.
  3. For each drink, pour about 2½ to 3 oz over a large ice cube in a rocks glass.
  4. Cut a strip of orange peel, squeeze it over the glass to release the oils, rub it around the rim, and drop it in.

Most courses do not allow outside alcohol, so save this for the patio at home or the 19th hole. Please drink responsibly, and never drive a cart or a car after drinking.
